Deer Poachers Head to JailAugust 3, 2011
Two Oregon hunters will serve four annual 90-day jail terms beginning on Oct. 1, the first day of deer season, as punishment for illegally killing more than 300 deer over the past five years, according to reports. They’ve also been stripped of their hunting privileges and been forced to pay restitution of tens of thousands of dollars. Shane and Rory Donoho made deer virtually non-existent in some areas.
It’s an unusual but “well deserved” sentence for offenders who took 30 times the bag limit for the area they poached in, says a Northwest Sportsman editorial. “Shane Donoho said the poaching goes back as far as he can remember, that he was taught by his father, Rory, who was taught by (Shane’s) grandfather,” Prosecutor Hall said in court, according to the Eugene Register Guard. “The day he and police served a search warrant at Rory Donoho’s home, the prosecutor noted, a 6- or 7-year-old grandchild in footed pajamas offered to show the officers how to hunt a deer.”
